Alice In Wonderland - November 2009

PosterSmallSouth Plantation High’s Alice in Wonderland is no children’s cartoon about a white rabbit scurrying around, late on his way to nowhere in particular. It’s not about a happy little girl innocently scampering through a new place and making friends along the way. Theatre director Jason Zembuch offers a much darker world through which his students explore the nature of addiction and the debilitating effects it has on those who suffer in its grasp.

Through the use of two Alices—one older and diminished, and one younger and naïve—Zembuch asks his audience to question the reliability of self-image. Upon looking in a mirror, Older Alice sees not her crestfallen state, but instead the cheerful Young Alice we all know and love. As she falls into a dream sequence, this Young Alice takes over and traverses Wonderland. However, this Wonderland holds all but happy things in store for her. As disturbing characters creep into what becomes a nightmare, Young Alice deteriorates over the course of the performance, enabling Older Alice to clearly see her true self in the end. It is this realization of what she has become that finally affords her the ability to change.

Community outreach plans include collaboration with local drug rehabilitation and/or counseling centers. Coordination with these and other popular centers will help spread word about the show and its underlying themes, thus spreading the positive impact brought about by the production.
