More a community event than a high school theater production, The Paladin Players of South Plantation High School are proud to bring to the Paladin Playhouse Theater stage Big, the Musical!, featuring a cast that includes student and faculty guest performers from local elementary and middle schools in Broward County!

Based on the 1988 movie Big starring Tom Hanks, Big, The Musical examines the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for” through the life of one pre-teen boy, Josh Baskin.  In his fervid desire for maturity he makes a wish at the local carnival that supernaturally transforms his little boy body into a “big” one.  Now possessing the frame of an adult, Josh experiences aspects of life generally reserved, not just for people in big bodies but for the more mature in mind- independence, responsibility, and love, and discovers an important life lesson – to not grow up too fast.

In choosing the spring musical for his high-school theatre troupe, director Jason Zembuch found not only a show to produce, but an opportunity to bring the community of Plantation together.  Performing side by side with his high-school actors will be students from Plantation Park Elementary, Tropical Elementary, Parkway Middle, and Seminole Middle Schools.  Making guest appearances during the run will be principals, artistic directors, and teachers from each of the participating schools as well.

For the past eight years, South Plantation High School has been known for producing Theatre for the Deaf, incorporating American Sign Language into their shows. For their 2008 production of West Side Story, their work was featured on ABC World News Tonight in their series: The Spirit of America.  Deaf and Hard of Hearing audience members will not be disappointed with Big, The Musical, as every word of this show will be not only spoken and sung, but signed as well.

Similar to the FAO Schwartz piano seen in the film, South Plantation’s production features a sixteen foot, playable walking piano that lights up.  With a recital of sorts that features both “Heart and Soul” and “Chopsticks”, the audience is in for a treat with Big, The Musical!
