Grimm's Fairy Tales

The Paladin Playhouse literary adaptation of Grimm's Fairy Tales began with a group of students sitting with Director Jason Zembuch at lunch discussing several of the more than 200 stories that were recorded by the Grimm brothers in the late 1700’s. Rather than ripping the stories apart and restructuring them to present a more “traditional” play, it was decided to stay true to the style of oral tradition and simply tell the stories, much as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm would have done on their many travels throughout the German countryside so many years ago.

Through these stories we get a glimpse of what life may have been like for those who came before us. We learn of their culture, their belief systems, and their values. Our stories are our history: a recording of the human experience. Today, storytelling is drastically different than what it was back in the days of the brothrs Grimm. Many of our stories are told through film, television, and now the Internet.

When the Grimm brothers recorded many of the stories that we have grown to love, they traveled from town to town and themselves listened to the stories as told by, say, a village elder, to the many who would gather to listen. Their stories not only entertained, they informed and instructed. Lessons were to be learned by the young, warning them of the dangers that were inherent in not being “good little boys and girls.”

As with most, if not all South Plantation High School productions since the arrival of Mr. Zembuch, this performance was done in the style of the Theatre For The Deaf, incorporating the use of American Sign Language so that these stories may be “heard” by all.

The success of this production extended beyond the walls of the Paladin Playhouse. Troupe 3383 received an invitation to perform Grimm's twice before an audience of their peers at the Florida Thespian Competition in Tampa, Florida, where they recieved standing ovations at the conclusion of each show.
